JJ’s Car Cruises could not have asked for better weather this past Sunday during the monthly car cruise. As I pulled into the lot, the first thing that caught my eye was a glistening, 1955 Chevrolet Bel Air, decked out in India Ivory over Gypsy Red.
There’s a love story about how Sherry Schaefer came to own this car, and no part of it has anything to do with this Chevy’s restoration. At the tender age of 15, Sherry’s cousin taught her how to drive in his ‘55 Chevy, which is exactly like the one she now owns, colors and all. She fell in love with the car and vowed to own one just like it someday. Her day finally came when husband, Mike presented Sherry with her dream car for Valentine’s Day earlier this year.
The car was formerly owned by Mike’s long-time friend, Tim Ringeisen. Mike had been pestering Tim for five years, but Tim wasn’t quick to jump at the offer. Finally, with Valentines Day fast approaching, Mike gave Tim an ultimatum. He told Tim to sell him the ‘55 or he would buy a ‘70 Road Runner, 440, 6-pac. The next morning, Tim called Mike and said he would sell him the car.
Sherry’s car is completely stock, except for the later vintage Chevrolet Rally Rims. Under the hood, however, is a different story. The original 265 cubic-inch V-8 (Chevy’s first V-8 since the 1918 model year) was replaced by a 350 cubic inch “crate” motor topped with a 4-barrell Carter carb. The original PowerGlide was dumped and a 350 Turbo-Hydramatic took its place.
